This was written sometime around 2008.
I learned so much from my children, and even more when they became adults. Yesterday evening while talking with my son Mario, he said, Mom, you need to turn on ESPN and watch this speech. I gotta go.
I was in a hotel, and even if I was at home, I honestly could not quickly locate ESPN…… so I grab the remote and tried to find ESPN channels…. I found it and turn it on, and it is Jimmy Valvano, who I quickly Googled on my blackberry to figure out why this was so important. After watching Jimmy V’s speech, I sent a text back to Mario; it read AWESOME.
Truth is Jimmy V made me cry. I realized that my Good Son saw such value in this great man that he QUICKLY had to get off the phone to watch this speech for what might have been his 10th time? And I was hearing it for the first time.
Jimmy V is saying Cry, Laugh & Learn, daily. Lately, I have forgotten to cry (which I have never really been good at), even laughing is not something I have done daily. And learn……while I continue to thirst for knowledge, I’ve lost the enthusiasm for learning.
It sort of got away from me with all the things happening around me. That’s an excuse, right?
Keep Your Dreams Alive…. Jimmy V is saying. Give Someone Hope.
This was a message I dearly needed to hear today. Mario responded to my text, instructing me to go to YouTube to listen to the full speech. Which I did.
Don’t give up, don’t ever give up. That’s The Jimmy V Foundation motto.
Thank you, My Good Son.
Now for the “Back Story”
I updated this story in January 2020. The Header image, Never Ever Give Up, was a gift from Mario and Risa.
As I often do, I write when I feel I need to write. This was written years ago and is a memory I have read over and over.
Hope means many different things to all of us. This morning my daughter sent a text to me asking what Hope means to me, timely. I sent her back my story of H.O.P.E. – He Offers Prosperity with Effort.
June 7th is National Cancer Survivors Day. While Jimmy V passed April 28th, 1993, there is no doubt in my mind, his message has helped many survive.
Keep Your Dreams Alive
Give Someone Hope
Don’t give up, don’t ever give up.
- Hope has a sanctifying effect. We who look expectantly for the return of Christ, knowing that when we see him, we shall become like him, purify ourselves “as he is pure” ( 1 John 3:3 ). Hope also stimulates good works. Following his teaching on the resurrection of the dead, Paul exhorts his readers to do the Lord’s work abundantly since such “labor is not in vain” ( 1 Cor 15:51-58 ).
Now, What to Write About?
Only one idea, Inspiration. Write What Inspires You.
January 2020, I was in a hotel in Las Vegas and, once again, began reading my writings. When I was finished reading, the following bible verse popped into my head…..To which I said, “Ok, ok, I hear you.”
- “From everyone to whom much has been given, much will be required; and from the one to whom much has been entrusted, even more, will be demanded” (Luke 12:48).
This is how much of what I write about happens. A thought, a message, a scent, something beautiful, the memory of a person I have met along the way, an experience I feel the need to be reminded of or a message I need to share. An incredible ride down a road I have never driven down, a great valley view from a mountain top.
On 1-8-2020, I was moved to write again. Now, it might take ten years before I publish it, but I think from the message I was given above, the expectation is that I stop taking ten years.
As I have been told in the past, “Don’t be Selfish; Get Up.”
